Choosing the Right Coverage
Know what coverage you need to protect you and your family
When shopping for auto insurance, you're faced with a lot of choices. In addition to the mandatory coverage required for driving, there are additional options available.
Auto insurance is designed to protect you in two ways: it protects your financial security and it also helps safeguard your investment in your vehicle in the event of a claim.
We want to make sure you have the right coverage to protect you and your loved ones. Although minimum coverage is required by law, we recommend you take the time to consider why you may need additional coverages.
Mandatory Coverage
Mandatory Coverage is minimum coverage required by law. If you're caught without it, you'll be fined or may lose your licence. Plus, if you're sued for damaging someone's personal property or for injuring or killing someone, you'll have to bear the cost on your own.
- Third Party Liability
-
Covers you if you accidentally damage someone else's property or if someone is injured or killed.
By law you must have at least $200,000 in third party liability coverage, but most people opt for $1 million or $2 million.
- Accident Benefits
-
This mandatory coverage applies if you're injured or killed in an automobile accident, regardless of who is responsible.
It includes supplementary medical, rehabilitation, attendant care, caregiver, income replacement, and non-earner benefits.
- Direct Compensation Property Damage
-
This coverage protects you against damage to your car in the event of an accident that's not entirely your fault.
This means you call us directly no matter who's at fault.
Because this coverage is mandatory, it's automatically included in the calculation of your premium.
- Uninsured Driver Coverage
-
This coverage protects you if you or a member of your family is hurt or killed by:
- An uninsured or unidentified driver
- A hit-and-run driver
Both your vehicle and its contents are covered against damage caused by a driver who is identified, but uninsured.
- Collision
-
Collision insurance protects you against damage caused to your vehicle when you're entirely at fault for an accident, as well as if your car:
- Hits an object
- Rolls over
Without Collision coverage, your vehicle repairs aren't covered if you're entirely at fault in an automobile accident.
Collision protection is mandatory if your vehicle is leased or purchased with financing.
- Comprehensive
-
Comprehensive coverage protects you against loss or damage to your vehicle that isn't included in collision coverage, such as:
- Theft
- Fire
- Vandalism
- Flood
- Wind storms
- Lightening
Optional Coverage
Beyond the standard coverage, there are also a few options you may want to consider, depending on your situation and the type of car you have.
- Removing Depreciation Deduction (Endorsement No. 43 R)
- Replaces your vehicle with a new one should your vehicle be declared a total loss or stolen and not recovered.
- Family Protection (Endorsement No. 44)
-
This coverage provides additional protection for everyone on your policy in the event of injury or death caused by an uninsured or underinsured motorist.
This endorsement covers the difference, according to the terms of your policy, between your liability insurance and that of the other, at-fault driver.
- Loss of Use (Endorsement No. 20)
-
Loss of use coverage reimburses you for the cost of renting a replacement vehicle, taking a taxi or public transit when your vehicle is being repaired or replaced following damages covered by your policy.
This coverage is not mandatory, but helps make the inconvenience of an accident more bearable. You can add this coverage to your premium calculation when you request an auto insurance quote.
This coverage is included in the Trouble-Free Option.
- $0 Deductible Option
-
You pay no deductible when making a claim – whether the accident is your fault or not. The $0 Deductible Option is a great way to avoid unforeseen expenses in the event of a claim.
- Trouble-Free Option®
-
The Trouble-Free Option® option provides auto insurance coverage:
- If you borrow or rent a car for a short period of time
- If your car breaks down
- If your car is stolen
- If your car is off the road following a covered accident
® Trouble-Free Option is a registered trademark of Desjardins General Insurance Group Inc.
