How to make an insurance claim
When Canadian motorists buy insurance, it’s usually for two reasons—it's required by law and it saves them costly out-of-pocket expenses in the event of an accident
But not everyone may be clear about the claims process. To shed some light on the matter, the Insurance Bureau of Canada has published tips.
For instance, the IBC says motorists should contact their insurance agent immediately after an accident. In fact, Canadians are required by law to file a written claim within 90 days of an accident, and some insurers specify the claims should come within seven days.
Once the insurer has been contacted, a claims adjuster is assigned to the case. After reviewing the policyholder's coverage—and consulting with all the parties involved in the accident—the adjuster determines the amount paid by the insurer to cover the claim.
