Auto Insurance Basics
Why should I insure my vehicle?
It's obvious you need insurance for a new vehicle. But even if your insurance costs more than the vehicle is worth, there are some very good reasons for being insured.
Insurance is mandatory in Quebec
A vehicle must be insured to travel on the roads. Civil liability insurance is mandatory and covers damages for which you may be held liable if:
- You damage someone else's property (e.g., car, fence, house)
- Someone is injured or killed in an accident that occurs in another province or in the United States
- In Quebec, bodily injury is paid by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec
By law, you must be covered for at least $50,000, but most people choose $1 million or more.
Other essential auto insurance coverage
Most financing or leasing companies may require this coverage in the event of damage caused to your vehicle:
- Collision: covers you if you are responsible for an accident such as a collision or a roll over.
- Comprehensive: includes coverage for theft, vandalism, broken windows, fire, windstorms, hail and flooding.
Additional coverage
Lastly, depending on your needs, you can add specific coverage, such as Replacement Cost, Value Plus OptionTM and $0 Deductible Option. See our coverages to discover optional protection that suit your needs.
