Perfect staycations on Ontario's scenic routes

Last update: Jul. 16, 2015, at 2:16 pm

At this time of year when the kids are out of school, the need to get away is unrelenting.

Some can’t wait to jet off to Europe or to the US. But why not just go exploring in your own backyard? Whether you prefer a day-trip or something a bit longer, Ontario is full of excellent things to see and do. And, did we mention the views are spectacular?

East-bound:

The route east from Toronto along Hwy 401 is a familiar path for those who regularly drive to Ottawa or Montreal. Belleville is the two-hour mark from Toronto. Once there, drive south into Prince Edward County. The area is well known for its provincial parks, farmers’ markets and charming B&Bs. You can also rent bikes to visit the numerous wineries that are making a splash on the Ontario wine scene.

South-bound:

Going south around the Golden Horseshoe towards the Niagara Escarpment is one of Ontario’s prettiest drives. This historic region saw many battles including the war of 1812. You’ll pass through rich farm land on your way to Fort George where the views across to New York are spectacular. This region also boasts some of the best wineries in the country and loveliest inns and B&Bs.

West and North-bound:

When heading west, the smaller highways and country roads are lovely. Be sure to visit the famous village of Kleinburg, home of the McMichael Gallery and their collection of the Group of 7. Further west is St. Jacobs and its famous farmers’ market. Arrive hungry because there’s lots of things to sample and buy. Later you can drive north towards Georgian Bay. If you’re lucky you can find a remote spot to watch the sun set over the bay.
