To help, in a column for the Toronto Star, driving expert Ian Law offered a few reminders.
For example, Law said that when snow and ice are in the forecast, the roadways become slicker, requiring motorists to slow their rate of speed. Yet all too often, motorists do no such thing and drive as though the roads are dry.
Law said that not only should drivers slow their rate of speed, but they should also increase their travelling distance between themselves and the car that’s in front of them, as it takes longer for vehicles to come to a stop when braking.
He added that while the salt and sand applied to roads help to increase the adhesive quality of tires, the grip is about 80 percent of what’s available to drivers when compared to dry conditions. Installing winter tires can help account for the difference.
By becoming more defensive drivers, motorists can help ensure their winters will be accident and auto-insurance claims free.
Helpful reminders for driving safely during the winter
While many Torontonians understand that winter weather can make for difficult driving, the prevalence of accidents stemming from treacherous conditions indicate some may be in need of a safe-driving refresher course.
