It is considered to be an effective method at helping to reduce winter-driving collisions. Though, road salt plays an important role for safe winter driving, it can also cause numerous issues with your car.
Rust
The negative aspect of using road salt consists of rusting. Road Salt is corrosive and creates a chemical reaction from when water and air are combined, which damages the metal of your vehicle. The repeated use of salt exposure can cause rust build-up to your car’s exterior and hydraulic brake system. It can also be destructive to your car’s exhaust and muffler systems. Examine your car almost regularly for rust, in particular, the tires and lower edges of the body sides.
One of the best ways to prevent your car from rust is to use a rust proofing spray. It will assist in protecting the undercarriage of your car from corrosion. Or the next time you are at your local dealership, ask for a sealant. A sealant is a one-time application used to provide durable protection against road salt and heat.
Washing your car once a month throughout winter with water and wax will help prevent road salt build-up and corrosion. Pay special attention to the undercarriage.
Another solution is to shelter your car from rust, dirt and other winter elements by purchasing a quality car cover for your car in winter. To learn more about the different kinds of car covers read our guide to buying and using car covers post.
Car Interior
Not only can road salt harm the exterior of your vehicle, it can also effect the interior. Make sure your car is equipped with rubber floor mats. Road salt from your boots can stain interior carpets, which can be tough to clean. Vacuuming your car’s interior will also help to soak up water and moisture. If you are concerned about salt staining your car seats, you can purchase seat covers or wash them with hot water, dish soap and washing soda.
Driveway
Most of us use salt on our properties to prevent slips and falls. Though using it on our driveways, can also contribute to rust and be harsh to the cement. Salt, along with frigid temperatures can cause cracks in the cement. An alternative to using salt on your driveway is to use kitty litter or sand.
Road salt will likely still be used for years to come. It may be troublesome for rusting and our driveways, but it’s imperative to our safety. Along with keeping your car well-maintained throughout winter, review your auto insurance coverage, and drive slowly and safely.
