Program

How do medals work?

Medals are a great way to challenge yourself to be a better driver! Each medal has 4 levels of difficulty, so you can improve your driving behaviour at your own pace. When you earn a medal, simply tap it to claim it.

How is the score calculated?

Your score is updated after each day of driving. It’s based on a general picture of your driving behaviour and habits. So one-off events won’t have a direct impact on your score.

Just like grades in school, you want to aim for a score over 60. Past data from the Ajusto program shows that most of our clients had scores of 76 or more. That works out to about 10% off your premium.

Good to know: nearly 90% of our clients signed up for Ajusto have reduced or maintained their car insurance premium. 1

How does my driving affect my score and my personalized premium?

Ajusto analyzes your driving data and calculates your score, based on:

Your driving behaviour

Cellphone distractions
Cellphone use while driving is one of the leading causes of collisions. If you stay off your phone when driving, you’ll improve your score and help make the roads safer.

Fast acceleration
Avoiding fast acceleration helps reduce the risk of a collision. You'll improve your score by pulling away from stops gently.

Hard braking
By keeping a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front, you'll have enough time to brake in an emergency and avoid a collision. Smooth braking will improve your score.

Speed
Respecting the speed limit decreases the risk of a collision and helps improve road safety. That being said, the parameters of the app have been set to allow a small margin over the legal speed limit (between 10 and 15 km/h depending on the limit), without compromising the safety values we want to promote with our Ajusto program. To maximize your score, drive at a safe speed.

Your driving habits

Time of day travelled
The risk of an accident is higher at certain times. That's why Ajusto associates a level of risk with different times of day. For example, driving at night is considered riskier than driving during the day due to driver fatigue and reduced visibility in the dark.

Distance travelled
The less you drive, the more you save. Shorter trips pay off because they increase your score.

Routine trips
If you take the same routes all the time, you're less likely to encounter surprises and have an accident. The more regular your daily routine, the higher your score will be.

If someone else drives my vehicle, will this impact my score?

No. Your score isn’t affected when someone else drives your car.

If you weren’t driving, but were a passenger, and the application didn’t detect it, simply indicate it in the app for the trip in question. Please note that you have 30 days to make this change, after which the trip will be archived.

Will I be penalized if I brake suddenly to avoid an accident?

Don't worry, a single event won't affect your score. We know that there are times when you need to accelerate fast to let an ambulance through or to brake hard to avoid a collision. So it’s good to know that your score isn’t based on one-off events. Instead it’s calculated on your driving profile as a whole.

If this type of event happens, you can remove trips from the app that don't reflect your good driving habits.

What happens if I don't drive for more than 30 days?

To get an accurate picture of your driving habits and behaviours, we need to analyze your trips over a long enough period. If you don't drive for more than 30 consecutive days:

  • You could lose your Ajusto enrolment discount for the first analysis period.
  • You might not receive a personalized premium, either after your first 6 months (180 days) in the program or at your insurance renewal.

To avoid this, we'll ask you to drive for an additional period. If there are 2 consecutive periods with insufficient data, you’ll no longer be eligible for Ajusto.

If you know you won't be driving for more than 30 consecutive days or will not meet a program requirement due to an unforeseen situation, please contact us so we can come to an arrangement.

What happens after my first 6 months in the program?

When you activate Ajusto in the app, you get a 10% enrolment discount on your auto insurance premium for your first 6 months (180 days).

This first trip analysis period corresponds to 180 days and at least 1,000 km of driving. It gives us a good picture of your driving behaviour and habits and helps calculate your score. We use your score to offer you a personalized premium that corresponds more closely to your actual driving. Your personalized premium replaces the 10% enrolment discount.

Safe driving could help lower your premium by as much as 25%. However, riskier driving could increase your premium by up to 20%.

Good to know: nearly 90% of our clients signed up for Ajusto have reduced or maintained their car insurance premium. 1

Because Ajusto is always on, your insurance premium will be updated every year to reflect your driving behaviour and habits.

Ajusto gives you personalized tips as well as information on your driving: number of days in the program, driving trips and kilometres travelled, time spent on the road, driving events and medals.

What are my responsibilities as an Ajusto user?

As an Ajusto user, you should make sure your phone is on and its battery is charged when you're driving so the application can collect data. If the battery is too low, no data will be collected.

Most of the time, the app will automatically detect if you're driving. However, if you weren't driving and the application did not detect it, you can correct the trip information in the Ajusto dashboard. Please note that you have 30 days to make this change, after which the trip will be archived.

Remember that the map doesn't show every detail of a trip. It only identifies the most significant events.

Can my insurance premium go up as a result of the Ajusto program?

With Ajusto, we're adding a "safe driving" factor to insurance. So by driving safely, you could see a premium reduction of up to 25%. Whereas riskier driving could mean a premium increase of up to 20%.

Good to know: nearly 90% of our clients signed up for Ajusto have reduced or maintained their car insurance premium. 1

When you renew your auto insurance policy, your premium will also take into account traditional factors like your age, gender, vehicle model and year, driving convictions and claims.

If you become ineligible or we are required to end your participation in the program, you will no longer be eligible to receive any enrolment discount or favourable program adjustment; however, any unfavourable program adjustment will continue to apply.

Savings

When will I get my 10% enrolment discount?

As soon as you activate Ajusto and accept the terms and conditions in the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app, we apply the 10% enrolment discount to your car insurance policy for your first 6 months (180 days) in the program.

How is my premium personalized and when will I start seeing a difference?

After driving for 6 months (180 days and 1,000 km):

  • Your 10% enrolment discount is replaced by a personalized premium based on your driving.
  • Your score is used to adjust your original auto insurance premium (before you signed up for Ajusto).

Here is an example for a $1,000 annual vehicle premium: 2

  • Upon activation with the enrolment discount: the vehicle premium will be reduced by 10% to $900.
  • At 180 days: the annual vehicle premium will be adjusted by the driving score and possible outcomes could vary between:
    • a maximum favourable adjustment of 25% bringing the premium to $750
    • and a maximum unfavourable adjustment of 20% bringing the premium to $1,200.
  • At renewal and at each future renewal, a new driving score will be used to adjust the annual vehicle premium.

Then every time you renew your auto insurance policy, we update your premium based on your driving for the previous 6 months (180 days), provided that:

  • You drive at least 1,000 km during each trip analysis period.
  • You avoid periods of longer than 30 consecutive days with no driving.

At the end of each analysis period, we'll send you a billing statement showing any adjustments to your premium. If your score is above 60, you'll have a favourable adjustment. If your score is below 60, you'll have an unfavourable adjustment.

  • If you pay your premium in a single payment, you'll get a refund of up to 25% on your premium if your adjustment is favourable. Or you'll need to make an additional payment of up to 20% if your adjustment is unfavourable.
  • If you pay your premium in several payments, the amount of favourable or unfavourable adjustment to your premium will be spread over your next payments.
What is the difference between a traditional premium and the Ajusto personalized premium?

Traditional insurance premiums are calculated based on several factors like age, gender, vehicle model and year, driving convictions and claims.

With Ajusto, we added a new "safe driving" factor. As you drive, you get a score that is used to personalize your insurance premium. So by driving safely, you could get a premium reduction of up to 25%. Whereas riskier driving could mean a premium increase of up to 20%.

Good to know: nearly 90% of our clients signed up for Ajusto have reduced or maintained their car insurance premium. 1

What coverages do the Ajusto program enrolment discount and personalized premium apply to?

The Ajusto program enrolment discount and personalized premium apply to most vehicle coverages and policy change forms. Some exceptions are:

  • Endorsement 20a – Travel costs
  • Endorsement 27 – Civil liability
  • Endorsement 34 – Accident benefits
  • Accident-Free Protection
  • Trouble-Free Option®

Enrolment

Who can sign up for the Ajusto program?

To sign up for Ajusto, you must have auto insurance with us or be the principal driver of a vehicle insured with Desjardins Insurance and have an iPhone or Android smartphone.

Occasional drivers (like teenagers who use your car) can't sign up for Ajusto.

Can I sign up for the new Ajusto program if I'm already in the old one?

Yes, you can sign up for the new Ajusto program. However, note that you'll lose any Ajusto discount on your auto insurance policy. It will be replaced by the 10% enrolment discount for your first 6 months (180 days) in the program.

After that, the enrolment discount is replaced by a more personalized premium based on your driving behaviour and habits. Then, each time you renew, we'll update your premium to reflect your driving in the last 6 months (180 days) of the past year.

To sign up:

How much does it cost to sign up for the Ajusto program?

Ajusto is an optional program that's completely free.

Can I opt out when I want?

You can opt out of the Ajusto program at any time. In the app, go to Profile, choose Preferences, then Ajusto. To opt out, tap Deactivate Ajusto. Ajusto will then stop recording your trips. We'll update your auto insurance policy and send you a confirmation by email.

If you just delete the app from your phone, you will still be enrolled in the Ajusto program. To opt out, you must deactivate the Ajusto add-on in the app.

If you opt out of the program before 6 months (180 days) have passed:

  • You'll lose your 10% enrolment discount.
  • If your score is below 60, we'll use your score in the calculation of your premium, once your removal from the Ajusto program is processed and at each subsequent renewal along with other rating criteria.
  • If you haven't driven 1,000 km in the program, we won't use any of the collected data in your renewal premium calculation.

If you opt out of the program after 6 months (180 days) have passed:

  • If your score is above 60, we'll remove your favourable adjustment from your premium.
  • If your score is below 60, we'll keep your unfavourable adjustment on your premium. At any time, you are encouraged to enrol again in the program and start a new trip analysis period to once again attempt to improve your driving. However, you will not receive the 10% enrolment discount and the previously applied score will remain. When you complete it, we'll update your premium using your new score.

App

Where can I download the app?

You can download the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app from the App Store® or Google Play™. In the app, go to Prevention to complete your enrolment.

Why do I need to accept the location permission request?

After downloading the app and activating Ajusto, your phone’s operating system (iOS or Android) will send a request to use your location. You need to allow location services so that Ajusto can operate properly.

The app uses your location to collect driving data and calculate your score, which we need to offer you a personalized premium based on your driving.

What does the app count as a cellphone distraction?

The app records a cellphone distraction if you use your cellphone in your hands while driving.

Your score won't be affected if you have your phone mounted on a holder so that you can use the GPS, make hands-free calls or use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Can I delete the app from my phone?

If you want to continue using Ajusto, you must keep the app installed on your phone.

If you want to stop using Ajusto and cancel your enrolment, you can opt out using the app. Go to Profile, choose Preferences, then Ajusto and tap Deactivate Ajusto. You can then either delete the app or keep it if you want to continue using other app features.

Note that just deleting the app on your phone won’t cancel your Ajusto enrolment.

If you have to delete the app from your phone for whatever reason, simply download the app again and you can pick up where you left off.

You can download the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app from the App Store® or Google PlayTM.

Need help? Call us at 1-888-277-8726 This link will launch your default phone software.

What should I do if I get a new phone?

Download the app onto your new phone and log in to your account with your email or cellphone number. We'll send you a 4-digit code to log in to your profile. This means you won't lose any of your saved driving data.

How does the app know whether I'm a driver or a passenger?

The application uses a predictive model to determine if you’re driving. It’s also how we determine what mode of transportation you’re using. But if it turns out you weren’t the driver or you used a different mode of transportation than the one detected, you can easily change your trip information in the app. Please note that you have 30 days to make this change, after which the trip will be archived.

Why can't I download the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app in the App Store or Google Play?

It's probably because the app isn't compatible with your smartphone model or your phone's operating system. The app is compatible with Apple iOS and Google Android. Note that Huawei phones are not compatible.

Does Ajusto use my phone's battery?

Yes. All apps use some battery power. The effect varies from one phone model to another, but battery consumption is highest when the app uses GPS. If your phone's charge is too low, Ajusto will not start up or will stop collecting data if you’re driving, as we don't want to drain your phone's battery recording trips. We are actively working to reduce the effect of the Ajusto section of the app on your battery consumption.

Remember to make sure your phone is switched on and the battery is charged so that trip data can be collected.

I told the agent I want to sign up for Ajusto. What happens next?

After you sign up for Ajusto with an agent, we'll send you a text or email message with your activation code. Follow the steps in the message to activate Ajusto.

To download the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app, go to the App Store® or Google Play™.

In the app, go to Prevention to complete your enrolment.

Why can't I activate the Ajusto section of the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app?

This is probably because your phone does not have the right functions to use Ajusto: a GPS, an accelerometer and a gyroscope. This is why Huawei phones are not compatible.

If your phone has all these functions and you still can't activate Ajusto, please call us at 1-888-277-8726 This link will launch your default phone software. to remove the Ajusto program from your auto insurance policy.

Note that Ajusto is not compatible with tablet computers.

Data

Is my data continuously collected?

All trips are saved and then analyzed. This means there's a short delay before the data is available. Depending on your Wi-Fi selection in your account settings, the data will be uploaded at the end of the trip or when you enter a Wi-Fi zone.

What data is collected?

When Ajusto is activated, it records:

  • Smartphone location (GPS)
  • Accelerometer data (which measures accelerations)
  • Gyroscope data (which measures rotational movements)
  • Time of day
  • Battery level
  • Anomalies (such as turning off the phone or revoking access to geolocation)
What can I track in the Ajusto section of the app?

Ajusto gives you a lot of information about your driving behaviour and habits:

Ajusto dashboard
The dashboard shows your score and trip summaries. If you weren't driving and the app thinks you were, you can indicate that here. Each trip is given a star rating based on the data collected.

The dashboard also shows you the days (out of 180) and kilometres (out of 1,000) remaining to complete your first trip analysis period.

Note that trips under 1 km will not appear in the app and will not be taken into account to calculate your score.

Trip summary
Tap any trip in your dashboard to see more details. You can view a map identifying the main events of the trip and use the legend to help you analyze it. Remember that the map doesn't show every detail of a trip—only the most significant events.

Achievements
Track how many medals your great driving has earned you!

How do I access my data?

Your driving data is available in the app minutes after completing a trip. You'll see:

  • Your driving score
  • The details of each trip
  • Your medals
  • A countdown of your trip analysis period from 180 days and 1,000 km
