Preventing a car accident
Winter driving requires four winter tires. Winter tires are made with a special rubber compound and tread adapted to winter conditions. The deeper tread provides better traction on snow and ice, which shortens the required braking distance and helps you avoid accidents.
Speeding is one of the leading causes of road accidents. Even if you think you are in total control of your vehicle, respect the speed limit. Remember—you're not alone on the road and accidents happen without warning.
Cellphones at the Wheel
Even though you can use your cellphone at the wheel with the hands-free function, it is recommended that you use it as little as possible. Cellphones are a major distraction. Since your attention must be focused on the road, it is best to you eliminate as many distractions as possible.
Drinking and Driving
If you feel you've had a few too many, plan on getting home safely:
- Designate a driver
- Take a taxi
- Use public transit
- Ask your hosts if you can stay the night
Drowsiness at the Wheel
As soon as you feel the first signs of fatigue (frequent yawning, itchy eyes, heavy eyelids, etc.), stop at a safe place and rest for a few minutes.
Driving and Heavy Vehicles
Make sure the drivers of heavy vehicles can see you.
- When following a heavy vehicle: Keep a reasonable distance. You must be able to see one of the vehicle's side mirrors at all times.
- When passing a heavy vehicle: The driver may not see you when you are beside him/her. If you notice the driver start to change lanes, accelerate or slow down so that he/she can see you.
- When returning to your lane: After passing, change lanes only when you can see the entire vehicle in your rearview mirror.
In case of a loss
If, despite these precautions, you have an auto accident, write up an accident report or call the police, if necessary. Then, call a claims advisor to determine what needs to be done and start the claims process.
